Quantity Surveyor 

PURPOSE OF THE ROLE:  

Reporting to the Head of Department or designated project lead, the Quantity Surveyor will be responsible for comprehensive project costing, estimation, cost modelling, procurement support, and financial oversight across multidisciplinary projects. The role ensures accurate cost planning, effective cost control, commercial risk management, and reliable reporting throughout the project lifecycle.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. PROJECT COSTING & ESTIMATION
  • Prepare detailed cost estimates, BOQs, cost plans, and commercial models for multidisciplinary projects 
  •  Apply elemental estimating, benchmarking, and cost modelling techniques to support concept design, feasibility, and budget development. 
  • Conduct cost risk assessments and sensitivity analyses across project stages. 
  • Review contractor, supplier, and subcontractor submissions, variation orders, and claims for accuracy, completeness, and contractual compliance. 
  • Provide cost advice to project teams to support sound commercial decision-making and procurement strategies

2. COST CONTROL & FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT 

  • Monitor project expenditure against approved budgets, forecasts, and cashflow projections. 
  • Review and verify payment certificates, measured quantities, and financial progress reports. 
  • Track cost performance indicators and provide early warning of deviations, trends, and commercial risks. 

Support change control, forecast final cost, and maintain accurate records of commitments and expenditure. 

3. PROJECT REPORTING & COMMERCIAL ADVICE 

  • Prepare regular cost reports, forecasts, and commercial summaries aligned with project progress, risks, and deliverables. 
  • Provide cost and commercial input during planning, design development, procurement, and project close-out stages. 
  • Contribute to project reviews by identifying lessons learned and opportunities to improve cost planning and delivery performance. 
  • Maintain accurate records and supporting documentation for auditability and informed decision-making. 
  • Liaise with internal disciplines, clients, contractors, suppliers, consultants, and project teams to gather cost data and validate assumptions. 
  • Support procurement and tendering processes with accurate cost information and commercial advice. 
  • Participate in project meetings and ensure cost documentation is properly maintained and accessible

4. QUALITY, COMPLIANCE & GOVERNANCE 

  • Ensure all cost documentation complies with contractual requirements, professional standards, and internal governance procedures. 
  • Maintain a cost documentation register aligned with project controls and quality management processes. 
  • Support continuous improvement and knowledge sharing in cost management, commercial controls, and best practice

EDUCATIONAL, KNOWLEDGE, AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Qualification Quantity Surveying or a related field, such as Construction Management or Property Studies (BSc/BEng/BTech) at NQF Level 7/8  
  • Mandatory Professional Registration with SACQSP (PrQS or equivalent) with S 
  • Advantages – Professional Registration with SACPCMP: Professional Construction Project Manager (Pr. CPM) 
  • Min. of 8+ years post-qualification experience in the construction industry, with at least 5 years in project costing, estimation, and cost control. 
  • Demonstrated experience in analogous costing, cost modelling, and cost benchmarking. 
  • Demonstrated experience in cost modelling, benchmarking, procurement support, and commercial management. 
  • Experience working on multidisciplinary building, infrastructure, or engineering projects is advantageous. 
  • Proficiency in software such as WinQS, Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint, and MS Project 
  • Valid Driver’s License  

SKILLS AND COMPETENCIES:

  • Strong analytical and quantitative modelling skills. 
  • Advanced proficiency in cost estimation tools, financial modelling, and MS Excel. 
  • Excellent writing and presentation skills. 
  • Strong stakeholder engagement and communication abilities. 
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet strict deadlines. 
  • Strong understanding of contracts, project delivery processes, cost governance frameworks, and commercial controls. 
  • High attention to detail, accuracy, and audit‑readiness 

Working Conditions: 

  • Location: On-site. Eastern Cape, Mthatha
  • Hours: Full-time; may require extended hours during critical phases. 
  • Travel: Occasional travel to project sites if multiple locations exist
