Architectural Technologist 

PURPOSE OF THE ROLE:  

Reporting to the Manager: Architecture / Project Architect, the Architectural Technologist is responsible for developing, coordinating and documenting architectural solutions within the limits of competence and category of registration, in alignment with applicable Identification of Work requirements, statutory regulations, project objectives, and organisational quality, safety and environmental requirements. 

The role focuses on translating approved design intent into technically resolved, code-compliant and buildable documentation; coordinating architectural information with other built environment disciplines; supporting project delivery through specification, detailing, site involvement and contract administration inputs; and contributing to professional accountability, communication and continuous development.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES :

  1. TECHNICAL / DESIGN DEVELOPMENT 
  • Develop and resolve architectural design concepts into coordinated technical solutions, details, schedules and documentation appropriate to the project scope and registration category. 
  • Prepare and update architectural drawings, specifications, room data, finishes, door/window schedules and related technical information for approvals, tender and construction. 
  • Apply knowledge of construction technology, building systems, materials and detailing to ensure buildability, functionality, maintainability and alignment with design intent. 
  • Use appropriate architectural software and digital tools to produce accurate, coordinated and version-controlled project information. 
  • Undertake site inspections and technical reviews to verify that construction work aligns with approved drawings and specifications, and recommend corrective action where required

2. PROJECT COORDINATION AND DELIVERY 

  • Coordinate architectural information with structural, civil, mechanical, electrical and other specialist inputs to achieve integrated project outcomes. 
  • Plan and manage allocated work packages, priorities, deliverables and deadlines in accordance with project programmes and quality standards. 
  • Support submissions to clients, authorities and internal governance processes by preparing compliant documentation and responding to technical comments. 
  • Contribute to tender and contract administration processes through technical documentation, clarifications, adjudication support and site meeting inputs within delegated authority. 

3. COMPLIANCE, RISK AND QUALITY 

  • Perform work within the limits of competence, responsibility and authority consistent with the applicable professional registration category and Identification of Work requirements. 
  • Ensure compliance with applicable legislation, municipal by-laws, National Building Regulations, SANS requirements, accessibility, fire, health and safety, and organisational quality procedures. 
  • Maintain auditable records of drawings, approvals, technical decisions, site instructions and revisions. 
  • Support quality reviews, audits and corrective actions to improve documentation quality and regulatory compliance

4. PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT 

  • Maintain and expand competence through structured learning, practical experience, continuing professional development and exposure to evolving building regulations, materials and digital tools. 
  • Demonstrate ethical conduct, accountability and sound professional judgement in all work performed. 
  • Contribute to knowledge sharing, mentoring and support for junior staff or candidate practitioners where applicable

5. REPORTING AND COMMUNICATION 

  • Prepare clear and accurate technical reports, design notes, submission documents, progress updates, meeting minutes and site records for internal and external stakeholders. 
  • Communicate technical matters, risks, assumptions, changes and recommendations in a manner appropriate to the audience. 
  • Maintain current and accessible project records, drawing issue sheets and correspondence registers.

EDUCATIONAL, KNOWLEDGE, AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Qualification in Architectural Technology or Architecture, such as a Diploma, Advanced Diploma or Bachelor’s Degree in Architectural Technology / Architecture. 
  • Registration with the relevant South African professional council as a Candidate Architectural Technologist or Professional Architectural Technologist, with demonstrated commitment to progression in line with Identification of Work requirements; professional registration will be an added advantage. 
  • Minimum 5+ years relevant post-qualification experience in architectural documentation, technical detailing, design development and project coordination. 
  • Demonstrable experience in preparing municipal submission drawings, tender documentation, construction drawings, schedules and site-related technical records. 
  • Working knowledge of applicable South African legislation, National Building Regulations, SANS requirements, accessibility, health and safety provisions, and quality management systems relevant to the role. 
  • Proficiency in relevant architectural and productivity software such as Revit, AutoCAD, ArchiCAD and/or BIM platforms, Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint and project collaboration tools. 
  • Valid driver’s licence.

SKILLS AND COMPETENCIES:

  • Ability to resolve architectural concepts into technically sound, coordinated and buildable solutions. 
  • Strong knowledge of construction technology, materials, detailing, building systems and documentation standards. 
  • Ability to interpret and apply statutory requirements, municipal processes and technical standards in the preparation of compliant documentation. 
  • Strong technical report writing, presentation and communication skills for both technical and non-technical audiences. 
  • Sound judgement, accountability and ability to take responsibility for decisions within delegated authority and area of competence. 
  • Ability to plan and manage work outputs, coordinate stakeholders and maintain quality and version control across project information. 
  • Commitment to ethical conduct, public safety, environmental stewardship and continuous professional development. 
  • Ability to mentor, collaborate and work effectively within multi-disciplinary built environment teams. 

Working Conditions:

Location: On-site. Eastern Cape, Mthatha

Hours: Full-time; may require extended hours during critical phases.

Travel: Occasional travel to project sites if multiple locations exist
