Junior Quantity Surveyor 

PURPOSE OF THE ROLE:  

Reporting to the Project Manager or designated project lead, the Junior Quantity Surveyor will support project costing, estimation, measurement, procurement administration, and financial control activities across multidisciplinary projects. The role is responsible for assisting with conditional assessments, site measurements, quality assurance checks, and accurate commercial reporting while developing practical experience under supervision.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES :

  1. COST ESTIMATION & MEASUREMENT SUPPORT 
  • Assist in preparing cost estimates, BOQs, take-offs, and cost plans under supervision. 
  • Carry out site measurements and quantity verification to support valuations, payment certificates, and progress assessments. 
  • Maintain accurate measurement records and supporting documentation for review and audit purposes. 
  • Support the review of contractor and supplier submissions for completeness and basic commercial compliance

2. COST CONTROL, CONDITIONAL ASSESSMENTS & REPORTING 

  • Assist with monitoring project expenditure against budgets, forecasts, and cashflow projections. 
  • Support conditional assessments by gathering site information, recording observations, and compiling measurement-based inputs for review. 
  • Prepare draft cost reports, progress updates, and supporting commercial summaries for senior review. 
  • Identify cost deviations or site-related issues and escalate them timeously to the Project Manager. 

3. QUALITY ASSURANCE & DOCUMENT CONTROL 

  • Perform quality assurance checks on measurements, cost data, and supporting documentation before submission. 
  • Maintain project records, registers, and commercial files in accordance with internal procedures. 
  • Support compliance with contractual requirements, professional standards, and project governance processes. 
  • Participate in project meetings and coordinate with internal teams, contractors, and consultants to obtain and verify required information. 

EDUCATIONAL, KNOWLEDGE, AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Qualification in Quantity Surveying or a related field, such as Construction Management (Ndip Building/BSc/BEng/BTech) 
  • Preferred candidate registration or progress toward professional registration with SACQSP. 
  • Advantageous – Exposure to site measurement, valuations, conditional assessments, or quality assurance activities in a construction environment.
  • Minimum of 2-4 years post-qualification or practical experience in the construction industry, preferably in quantity surveying, estimating, or project commercial support. 
  • Basic understanding of measurement principles, BOQs, cost estimation, and project cost control. 
  • Experience working on building, infrastructure, or engineering projects will be advantageous. 
  • Proficiency in software such as WinQS, Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint, and MS Project. 
  • Valid Driver’s License. 

SKILLS AND COMPETENCIES:

  • Good analytical, numerical, and measurement skills. 
  • Working knowledge of cost estimation tools, spreadsheets, and quantity surveying principles. 
  • Ability to conduct site measurements, record observations accurately, and compile conditional assessment inputs. 
  • Attention to detail and ability to perform quality assurance checks on work outputs. 
  • Good written and verbal communication skills. 
  • Ability to work under supervision, manage priorities, and meet deadlines. 
  • Professional attitude, willingness to learn, and ability to collaborate with project teams and stakeholders. 

Working Conditions: 

  • Location: On-site, Eastern Cape,Umthatha
  • Hours: Full-time; may require extended hours during critical phases. 
  • Travel: Occasional travel to project sites if multiple locations exist
  • Fixed term contract 36 months.
