Senior Technologist


PURPOSE OF THE ROLE:

Reporting to the Project Manager, the Engineering Technologist is responsible for planning, analysing, designing, coordinating and managing broadly defined civil engineering activities and delivering fit-for-purpose technical solutions in accordance with ECSA IDoEW requirements, applicable codes and standards, project objectives, and organisational quality, safety and environmental requirements.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

TECHNICAL

  • Define, investigate and analyse broadly defined civil engineering problems using appropriate methods, assumptions, data and judgement.
  • Develop, evaluate and recommend fit-for-purpose design options, technical reports, specifications and drawings for roads and associated municipal infrastructure.
  • Apply engineering principles, standards, codes and software tools to design development, detailing, quantity calculations and technical documentation.
  • Review technical outputs for quality, constructability, operability, maintainability and
  • compliance with client and regulatory requirements.
  • Undertake site inspections, condition assessments and verification of construction against design intent, and recommend corrective action where required.

MANAGEMENT

  • Plan and manage allocated engineering activities, deliverables, interfaces, resources and schedules within approved project parameters.
  • Coordinate inputs from internal disciplines, contractors, suppliers and stakeholders to achieve integrated project outcomes.
  • Identify risks, constraints and dependencies affecting scope, cost, programme, quality and safety, and escalate where necessary.
  • Supervise and guide technicians, graduates or support staff on assigned work packages where applicable.

COMPLIANCE, RISK AND QUALITY

  • Perform engineering work within the limits of competence, responsibility and authority consistent with ECSA registration category and IDoEW requirements.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable legislation, municipal and industry standards, contractual obligations, quality procedures and safety requirements.
  • Apply sound judgement to technical decisions, document reasons for decisions, and maintain auditable records.
  • Support audits, reviews and corrective actions to improve quality and regulatory compliance.

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

  • Maintain and expand competence through structured learning, practical experience and continuing professional development.
  • Demonstrate ethical conduct, accountability and professional judgement in all engineering activities.
  • Contribute to knowledge sharing and mentorship within the team and support the development of junior staff.

TENDER ADMINISTRATION

  • Prepare or review technical inputs to tenders including scopes of work, specifications, bills, drawings and evaluation criteria.
  • Support technical evaluation of submissions, clarifications and adjudication inputs within delegated authority.
  • Assess functionality, technical compliance, capacity and risks associated with tender submissions in liaison with the Unit Head or Project Manager.

REPORTING AND COMMUNICATION

  • Prepare clear and accurate technical reports, memoranda, progress updates, design notes and meeting inputs for internal and external stakeholders.
  • Communicate technical matters, assumptions, risks and recommendations in a manner appropriate to the audience.
  • Maintain up-to-date registers, drawing issue records, data sets and project correspondence.

ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS:

• Qualification Civil Engineering Degree (BSc/BEng/BTech) in Civil Engineering
• Mandatory – Professional Registration with ECSA (Pr. Tech Eng /Pr. Eng)
• Minimum 8 years relevant post-qualification experience in civil engineering, including design office and/or project implementation experience in roads or municipal infrastructure.
• Demonstrable experience in analysing broadly defined engineering problems, developing technical solutions, preparing design documentation and managing allocated engineering activities.
• Working knowledge of applicable South African legislation, municipal requirements, design standards, construction contracts and quality management systems relevant to the role.
• Proficiency in relevant engineering and productivity software such as Autodesk Civil 3D, AutoCAD, Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint and MS Project.
• Valid driver’s licence.

SKILLS AND COMPETENCIES
• Ability to define, investigate and analyse broadly defined engineering problems systematically and critically.
• Capability to develop and evaluate practical engineering solutions considering cost, risk, quality, safety, environmental and operational factors.
• Strong technical report writing, presentation and communication skills for both technical and non-technical audiences.
• Sound judgement, accountability and ability to take responsibility for decisions within delegated authority and area of competence.
• Ability to plan and manage engineering activities, coordinate stakeholders and deliver outputs within time and budget constraints.
• Knowledge of engineering principles, applicable standards, statutory requirements and quality assurance practices.
• Commitment to ethical conduct, public safety, environmental stewardship and continuous professional development.
• Ability to mentor, collaborate and work effectively within multi-disciplinary teams.

Working Conditions:

Location: Office based. Head office, Durban Westville.

Hours: Full-time; may require extended hours during critical phases.

Travel: Occasional travel to project sites if multiple locations exist
